Catastrophe

For my current project brief, titled 'Catastrophe', we had to design a garment which main purpose is survival in our own personally designed apocalyptic scenario. After lots of research into current natural and man made disasters, I decided to create my apocalypse around the theme of War. I began with huge interest in the current man made destruction going on in Afghanistan. My interest was then drawn to the innocent civilians living in Iraq and Afghanistan who have been forced to flee there homes for survival. My final reached theme is a escape to utopia, where civilians fleeing from a wasted war land environment are journeying to a safe land; utopia. The garment I have designed, is the uniform for the group of civilians, it is designed to protect themselves through natural ways only, mainly camouflage and mobility. I was inspired by Lucy Orta's work and Aitor Throup's military style garments. Pages of my sketchbook showing my development and inspiration will be posted soon :).
